Pearl Spot is fondly called as Karimeen in Malayalam, is one of the most sought-after fish in Kerala. Being an authentic dish of the state, it can be cooked in a variety of styles. Karimeen, commonly found in backwaters of Kerala, is best to have when fried or steamed after wrapping it in foil or banana leaves. It is low in fat and has high protein content.

This fish is fairly expensive and is available throughout the year. It is caught mainly using gill nets. It commonly reaches 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in length, and the maximum length is twice that.

Karimeen is a highly nutritive food. It contains low fat, high protein, rich in omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamin D and riboflavin as well as minerals like Calcium and Phosphorus. Regular consumption of fish is heart-healthy as it helps lower blood pressure.
